Tove Jansson var en finländsk författare och konstnär som föddes i Augusti 1914, Helsingfors. Hon växte upp tillsammans med sin mamma, en svensk konstnär och hennes far, en finländsk skulptör. Hennes bror Lars blev tecknare och hennes andra bror Per blev fotograf.

Således något av en besvikelse, men man får väl skylla på allt förhandssnack om FILMTRAILER. Vi har redan fått en film om gayikonen Tom of Finland. Hallqvist translated, Jansson drew, Lindgren published it, and it flopped! Tolkien fans didn’t enjoy Jansson’s drawings much, and the illustrations were not used** again before 1994. By then, the 1962 version was cherished by Tove Jansson fans and Tolkien collectors over the World, and it had become quite hard to find.

Tove Jansson illustrated The Hobbit for the Swedish and Finnish editions, creating a dozen enchanting full page drawings plus many smaller vignette pieces. Never before published in an English-language edition, the 2016 calendar contains all twelve of these illustrations, many of the vignettes, and a full-colour centerfold featuring her dramatic cover painting of Smaug attacking the Dwarves.
